activities HOW  SMART WORKS

Sports as we know builds in us the mental and physical toughness to take on challenges and face the harshest of life situations. It encourages leadership qualities, team spirit and so on. By getting children involved in sports activities they become self-aware and will understand their strengths and weaknesses better helping them to work and behave accordingly. Participation in sports and exercise inculcate in young people key values such as honesty, teamwork, fair play, and respect for themselves and others and to adhere to rules.

Music has been known to have many positive effects on listeners. Apart from health benefits, music also enhances creativity. “Music is an important and extremely useful tool in the way we learn and denying its power is a waste of a truly wonderful resource.” Kristian David Olson had said in his paper The Effect of Music on Mind: Beyond Soothing the Savage Beast dated 22 February 1996.

Recreation Therapy (Dance, Yoga and Meditation) helps improve physical, cognitive, emotional and leisure functions of children. These leisurely therapies will help children deal with day-to-day challenges and cope better with life.

Other therapeutic activities include counselling, community services, caring for the elderly and so on. Children from juvenile homes will get the opportunity to care for the elderly residing in care homes.

SMART also offers VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES to overseas students interested in and devoted to working with children coming from different backgrounds in India. Volunteers are encouraged to work in schools, juvenile homes and in tribal areas with children. Interactive sessions between Indian children and overseas students will give these children an international experience and better exposure to people from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds.

Though child development includes physical, intellectual, social, and emotional changes, children get to undergo these changes only fractionally. Education up to the age of 14 is free and compulsory in India, however, children are mostly just academically-oriented, bound to text books pressured by standardised examinations depriving them the opportunity to learn holistically. To add to the woes, in schools, sports, music, art, dance and so on are referred to as “extra-curricular”. However, even attending schools is, often a luxury for children coming from families that are below the poverty line. Children from the tribal belts need a lot of encouragement and handholding to come out of their shells, to blend in with the world outside of theirs. It is not easy to win their confidence, bearing in mind the humble and innocent lifestyles as well as their limited exposure to the world outside. Because tribal children come from unique historical and social backgrounds they will need special attention and orientation to bridge the two social cultures. Overseas students are invited to volunteer with us.
